The Jockey Club, which owns 15 horse racing courses around the UK, has sold land next to Haydock Park Racecourse in Ashton-in-Makerfield, Merseyside, to housebuilder Rowland Homes.
Rowland will build 84 three- and four-bedroom homes on the 6.5-acre Shark’s Fin site, named for its shape. The Jockey Club has already taken the site, used as an overflow car park, through outline planning with Wigan Council.
The sale is part of the club’s strategy to raise money it can reinvest into its business and British horse racing.
Stuart Mitchell, managing director of group property at the Jockey Club, said: “Having secured outline planning, we are pleased to get this sale completed and recycle the capital back into the business and British horse racing.
“This sale forms part of the Jockey Club’s wider real estate strategy to drive capital realisation and new rental income through asset and development management, on non-core racing land, as well as considering where our racing infrastructure can be improved and upgraded.”
Savills advised the Jockey Club on the sale.
