Canary Wharf Group has filed a planning application with Tower Hamlets to revamp the public realm and build a retail pavilion at Montgomery Square and Water Street, E14.
Under the proposals, new landscaping would be complemented by a flexible event space and a three-storey retail pavilion.
Road amendments would also be made to Upper Bank Street and Montgomery Street to create a more pedestrian-friendly public realm around Water Street.
As it stands, Montgomery Square comprises an unused open space and a 640 East café and bar on its north-western corner. The open space in the middle of the square will be retained to accommodate events such as markets, exhibitions and cultural performances. This space will be framed by planting.
The café building would be demolished and a 5,873 sq ft timber-framed retail pavilion built in its place.
The proposal also includes plans to convert Water Street into a linear plaza and public space. The plans would reduce traffic by restricting vehicle access and creating a more pedestrian-friendly route between Canary Wharf and Wood Wharf.
If approved, the project is expected to be finished by the autumn/winter of 2025.
