Council waves through UK’s first beachfront retirement village

Later living developer-operator Untold Living has been given permission to bring forward its proposals for the UK’s first beachfront integrated retirement community in Eastbourne, East Sussex.

The decision follows seven months of consultation with residents and the local council to adjust the development’s design, following previous deferrals.

The development, designed by Gaunt Francis and backed by London-based investor Matter Real Estate, will see the delivery of 126 homes on a 2.5-acre site at Sovereign Harbour.

The scheme comprises a mix of one- and two-bedroom flats alongside amenities and access to 24/7 support and care. Each of the homes will have access to private outdoor space – a terrace or a patio – while communal facilities at ground-floor level will include front and rear entrances to encourage social interaction, for both residents and non-residents.

The scheme is expected to help relieve the growing pressure on local health and social care services.

Russell Jewell, chief executive at Untold Living, said: “This development will prioritise local residential needs, allowing residents to continue to live independently while removing pressure from local healthcare services and providing a range of new spaces and facilities for the local community to enjoy.

“Following substantial redesign through the course of our discussions with the local planning authority, we are delighted with the result and look forward to continuing to be long-term partners for the town.”
