Eamonn Boylan, the former deputy chief executive of Homes England, is understood to be being lined up to return to run the department on an interim basis.
While no decision has yet been agreed, sources close to the department said Boylan was the favourite to take on the interim chief executive role after incumbent Peter Denton stepped down from the role earlier today.
Denton and chairman Peter Freeman both announced they would be stepping down from Homes England after four years of leading the agency together.
Boylan was deputy chief executive at Homes and Communities Agency (now Homes England) for two years from 2008.
He has held a number of high-profile public sector roles, including interim chief executive of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, interim chair at Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation and interim chief executive of Manchester City Council.
He has also held the role of chief executive of Stockport Council and chair of North West Evergreen.
A spokesperson for Homes England said no interim chief executive had yet been confirmed and declined to comment further.
