JV sounds out plans for acoustics research centre at Crescent Salford

The University of Salford, Salford City Council and the English Cities Fund have lodged proposals for an acoustics research facility at the £2.5bn Crescent Salford regeneration scheme.

The proposed building, spanning almost 14,000 sq ft would become a new home for the research, commercial and teaching activities of the University of Salford’s Acoustics Research Centre.

The all-electric building would target a BREEAM rating of Excellent.

Morgan Sindall Construction has been appointed as the main contractor to deliver the facility, having previously collaborated with the university on projects including the North of England Robotics Innovation Centre.

If planning permission is granted, work is expected to begin on-site in summer 2025 and complete in spring 2027.

The move represents the second staging post in the creation of Crescent Innovation, one of six distinct zones within the Crescent Salford scheme, following work commencing on Salford Rise in September last year. Crescent Innovation will comprise of 933 homes, 1.7m sq ft of new commercial innovation, academic and research floorspace, active ground-floor space, and a new movement hub.

Max Bentham, development director for the Crescent Salford partnership, said: “The regeneration of this currently underutilised area will help to enhance Salford’s global reputation for industry and innovation. Not only will students and employees at the University of Salford benefit from this facility, but so too will the surrounding community and wider region as the area attracts businesses and investment.

“The facilities within Crescent Innovation will be places to innovate and collaborate, bringing education and industry together to help shape the future of Salford.”
