EDITOR’S COMMENT I can’t take credit for the quote above. I’m borrowing it – with good reason, I hope – from this week’s big interviewee, Tyler Goodwin at Seaforth Land. At the launch of the company’s renovated Space House in London’s Covent Garden late last year, Tyler said it was the message he gave to his team as they worked to deliver the project. A call to recognise the work for the privilege and responsibility that it is.
And what a project the team delivered. A beautiful blend of old and new, a building that wears its Brutalist heritage proudly while still being the amenity-packed, modern office that we’re told today’s tenants demand. And, hey, I’m a sucker for physical media, so at that opening they had me from the moment I heard Curtis Mayfield’s soundtrack to Super Fly playing on a turntable in the lobby.
I’ve been thinking about that blend of old and new a lot as we head into a new era under the ownership of Mark Allen Group. You can’t write for a publication that has lasted for more than 165 years without feeling that history, heritage and pride in its past, even as you work to future-proof it. And it’s a feeling of pride I already know is shared by the team in our new parent company.
Later in the year we’ll launch a redesigned magazine with a fresh look and new content, and I can’t wait. I told you, I’m a sucker for physical media. Our focus won’t waver – we want to make a magazine, website and events that you turn to for the smartest takes on what’s happening in real estate. Deals big and small; interviews that make you stop and think; deep dives into the market and what it takes to run a successful business in it; and the ways in which the industry can prove that it isn’t just an economic force, but also understands its role in creating safer, happier, more inclusive and productive places, no matter the asset class. And if you have your own ideas of what you would like to see, you can reach me on tim.burke@markallengroup.com.
Like Seaforth’s Space House, which had been known as CAA House while occupied by the Civil Aviation Authority but now has its original moniker once again, we’re also bringing the old name back. There are so many of you who still refer to us as Estates Gazette rather than EG. We’ve heard it – literally – and now we will too. Old name, new era; a simple change that makes a big statement.
Just a few weeks ago, when it looked like a different outcome was on the cards, your messages of support lifted the spirits of this team. Thank you. You should know that we don’t take that support for granted, and you should know how excited we are about having the opportunity to continue doing what we love for you. I couldn’t be prouder to lead the team that takes Estates Gazette into its next chapter, and every person you see listed in the “flannel panel” below knows what a privilege and responsibility it is to do this. After all, you get one of these in your life.
This is ours.
