UKREiiF: Birmingham seeking partners for Digbeth regen plans

Birmingham City Council is seeking development partners, institutional investors and potential occupiers for sites across Digbeth, with its newly launched Digbeth Prospectus.

The prospectus, which was unveiled at UKREiiF, highlighted more than 35 plots across 10 key development sites.

It lays out plans to deliver more than 6,000 new homes and 3m sq ft of commercial floorspace across the Digbeth area.

It forms a core part of the council’s wider regeneration strategy under the Our Future City: Central Birmingham Framework 2045, which aims to bring 10,000 homes to the wider Central East area.

“Digbeth is a diverse, creative, enterprising community, home to freelancers, makers, agencies, start-ups and cultural venues,” said Sharon Thompson, deputy leader and cabinet member for economy and skills at Birmingham City Council.

“Its rapid transformation into a buzzing creative quarter and centre for TV and film production, fuelled by the BBC’s new broadcast centre and MasterChef studios, is helping return the area to a position of national importance, providing much-needed high-quality jobs for this growing city.”

Surrounded by approximately £11bn of planned infrastructure and development over the next decade – including the Smithfield development, the new Sports Quarter, Birmingham Knowledge Quarter and the upcoming HS2 Curzon Street Station – Thompson said Digbeth is fast becoming one of the UK’s “most strategically important urban districts”.

She added: “The Digbeth Prospectus represents the latest delivery phase of Our Future City: Central Birmingham Framework 2045 and will help bring forward over 6,000 new homes and over 3m sq ft of new workspace. By working with partners and stakeholders across the public and private sector we will make sure that Digbeth remains the go-to place for creative individuals and businesses.”

The launch took place alongside other West Midlands local authorities, as the region showcased more than £18bn in investment opportunities at this year’s UKREiiF event.
