Government steps up town centre shopping drive

The government has renewed its campaign to protect town centre shopping areas from out-of-town retail developments by blocking a proposed factory outlet in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire. John Gummer, the Environment Secretary, turned down the proposed 13,935 sq m site because of the lack of access to the area by public transport. The move could well spell the end of other similar proposed outlets where manufacturers sell direct to the public.
