Italian company Candy is to plough £20m by the end of next year into two UK plants of its Hoover European Alliance subsidiary. It will create 50 new jobs and protecting over 2,000 more. The plants are at Merthyr Tydfil, Wales and Glasgow in Scotland.
Around £8m will go on making tumble dryers and new floor cleaners in the two factories respectively. But the remaining funds are then likely to go to new plant and equipment at Merthyr Tydfil next year. Production of domestic appliances would rise from about 500,000 a year to around 850,000 a year by 1997. The spending depends on a UK regional assistance programme grant.
