The corporation’s latest annual report states that £98m of private sector investment had been attracted to the area in the year to 31 March 1996. The report claims that this means £1.013bn of private funds have been invested in the area during the corporation’s eight-year existence.
As a result, this investment has generated a total of 43,075 jobs. Eight years ago, 24,950 people were employed in the area.
In1995/6, a total of 86 companies relocated to Trafford Park, occupying 76,000 sq m (818,064 sq ft) and bringing 4,866 jobs. Work is now underway on the Trafford shopping centre at Dumplington, which stands within the corporation’s area. On completion this £217m scheme will generate another 6,000 jobs.
Construction has also started on the final piece of the £90m infrastructure jigsaw planned by the corporation: the 2.5km (1.5 mile ) dual-carriageway Eastern Spine Road.
The corporation is due to be wound up in March 1998.
