Tunelled £300m bypass for Stonehenge shelved

Transport secretary Sir George Young shelved a proposed £300m tunnelled bypass for Stonehenge until after the millennium. English Heritage and the National Trust said they were disappointed by the decision. The Department of Transport said unless an alternative source of funding could be found, there was no prospect of building the tunnel “in the foreseeable future”.
