Enterprise Zone tax and business rates allowances cost £45m in 1995/96

Over 60,000 sq m (645,855 sq ft) of new floor space was completed in the eight Enterprise Zones in England and Scotland in 1995/96, says a report* commissioned by the Department of the Environment.

Public sector investment during the year totalled over £45m. About £33m of this figure was invested in land and infrastructure, while the remainder is accounted for by revenue foregone to the Treasury from business rates and tax.

The report covers both the more recently established zones (East Midlands, Dearne Valley, East Durham, and Tyne Riverside) as well as the existing zones (North West Kent, Inverclyde, Sunderland and Lanarkshire).
