Stonehenge make a PFI bid for £41m lottery cash

Stonehenge yesterday made the first application for lotteryfunding under the private finance initiative.

English Heritage has submitted a bid to the Lottery-funded Millennium Commission for £41m with which to complete an £83m facelift of the ancient site.

The National Trust, which owns most of the land, is joining EHin the formation of a Stonehenge Trust to manage the MillenniumPark. The visitor centre will be created by the Tussauds Group,which won a private finance initiative competition to find acommercial partner for the development.

Tussauds has an ambitious scheme to develop the site whichincludes a theme park of ancient history, with shops,restaurants, and underground parking space for 3,000 cars.
