Fire crews extinguish blaze at Treasury building in Whitehall

Fire crews have extinguished a fire which at one point this morning threatened to sweep through the Treasury building in Whitehall, London, SW1.

About 35 firefighters tackled the blaze, which broke out in a sub-basement at the St James’s Park end of the building. According to the Fire Brigade, the fire was caused by an electrical fault.

The full extent of the damage is now being assessed. There is thought to be extensive smoke damage in the affected area.

Treasury staff were evacuated to safety near St James’s Park but were recently allowed back into the building.

The Treasury building, which fronts Great George Street and Parliament Street, comprises 800,000 sq ft (74,320 sq m) gross but due to the complexity of its layout the property provides just 330,000 sq ft (30,657 sq m) net.
