Cardiff looks for £5m to secure European railfreight terminal

Cardiff will be looking for £5m in grants for a Europeanrailfreight terminal if the council gives it planning consent as expected.

The backers of the £12m terminal believe approval willput pressure on the Welsh Office to close the funding gap. The new terminal will be “intermodal” – allowing goods to be transferred from road to rail – with direct services to the Channel tunnel.

The consortium behind scheme consists of Cardiff council, Hyder, and Euro-Clad, which owns the proposed 10.52ha (26 acre) site next to the London mainline railway at Wentloog, Cardiff. The Welsh Office is considering the impact this new development will have on Cardiff’s existing railfreight facility, owned by the recently privatised Freightliner.
