The Financial Times comments on Belfast’s new 2,200-seat Waterfront Hall which was inaugurated last weekend. It is part of a £140m project to regenerate a run-down inner-city area near Belfast’s harbour.
The newspaper says it was built to meet a political need rather than to house an orchestra or fit an arts policy. It says whether a new arts venue was really necessary seems to have been an afterthought. It concludes that such a capital-intensive scheme only makes sense when the resources and cultural infrastructure are provided to support it.
