Government predicts 26 new projects to aid “greening” of Scottish Power

Two major suppliers of Scotland’s electricity were told by the Government today to produce more power from renewable sources.

A series of new wind, hydro-electric and waste conversion schemes would result from new targets set for ScottishPower and Scottish Hydro-Electric, junior Scottish Office minister George Kynoch made clear in a commons written reply.

He disclosed an Order was being laid before Parliament requiring the two generators to produce 112MW of electricity from renewable energy sources.

Kynoch said this would mean 26 new projects, including nine waste-to-energy schemes, seven wind projects and nine hydro-electric schemes.

The minister stressed he was aware of the possible effects on the environment and the landscape of some renewable projects, like wind farms.

“For this reason, we have decided that wind projects, while being allocated substantial capacity within the Order, should not form a disproportionately large part of it.”
