John Lewis Partnership subsidiary Waitrose has submitted a planning application for the development of the 8.38ha (20.71 acre) St James’ site in central Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, as a mixed-use scheme. The application will incorporate proposals for a 4,830 sq m (52,000 sq ft) Waitrose “food & home” superstore, a multiplex cinema, restaurants and cafes.
Cheltenham Council has drawn up a shortlist of ten developers to build the scheme’s leisure element. The council will select a developer in May.
Infrastructure work planned for the scheme includes the construction of a new link road from Gloucester Road to St George’s Road. The council will decide on the planning application in June. A second application detailing the leisure proposals will follow once a decision has been made on the first application.
If all goes to schedule, the two-year construction programme should start in early 1998.
