Central Birmingham offices up for sale as Royal Mail moves to Aston

The Royal Mail has put the freehold of its 74,320 sq m (800,000 sq ft) city centre sorting office on Blucher Street and Royal Mail Street up for sale following its decision to move to Aston.

It plans to relocate its sorting operations to a new Mail Centre at Newtown by the end of 1998 in a £40m project and is also looking for new delivery and administration offices in the city centre.

According to local agents, the Royal Mail’s existing 1.61ha (4 acre) site in the city centre would be best suited for leisure development. It is close to both Broad Street, Argent’s Brindleyplace mixed development, and the former Central TV site which Carlton and Hampton Trust are planning to redevelop.

Weatherall Green & Smith is acting for the Royal Mail.
