Friends Provident gets go-ahead for multiplex at Castle Mall, Norwich

Friends Provident has won its fight to build a multiplex cinema on top of its Castle Mall shopping centre in Norwich.

The council refused consent in February but a special planning meeting last week examining four multiplex proposals concluded that the city could sustain a second multiplex and that Castle Mall was the councils preferred location.

Gazeley and Railtrack already has consent for a multiplex at their Riverside evelopment. The plans considered last week were Castle Mall, Norwich Unions bus station site, Fordgate St James Nestle site on the approach road to the city and a scheme promoted by Castle City Estates at the ECN building in Rouen Road.

Friends Provident fund manager Paul Herrington said: “We hope to have our planning application ratified by next month and are re-starting talks with all the major operators including Virgin, Odeon and ABC.”
