Leicester Council has given detailed planning consent for a 6,673 sq m (71,830 sq ft) Tesco superstore at Hamilton District Centre, Maidenwell Avenue.
The scheme also includes a 2,323 sq m (25,005 sq ft) non-food retail warehouse, parking, a petrol filling station and 735 sq m (7,912 sq ft) of unit shops. Proposals for a health surgery, a public house and community and leisure facilities will require separate planning applications.
The superstore application – a fresh one following previous outline consents – was made by Tesco and the Trustees of the Humberstone and Elms Farm Trust. The city council owns one third of the 7.92 ha (19.57 acre) site, currently agricultural land.
Work is expected to start on the superstore late this year, but it depends on government approval for a CPO making possible a link road between the A46 and A47 roads, a council spokeswoman said.
