Exclusive: Developers square up over Fareham town centre

Fareham Council has shortlisted Lend Lease and THI, Miller Developments, Morrison and London & Cambridge to develop a key 4.04ha (10 acre) town centre site in Fareham, Hampshire.

All four are proposing a retail/leisure mix anchored by a multiplex cinema of between nine and 12 screens with a multi-storey car park of up to 600 spaces. Morrison is proposing the largest scheme of around 26,941 sq m (290,000 sq ft).

London & Cambridge Properties had already been selected to build a scheme on the site – known as Market Quay – but the company decided not to progress. The developer had proposed a 22-screen multiplex cinema but faced objections from neighbouring Eastleigh Council. Eastleigh claimed that a multiplex of that size would harm operators within its own area.

In a joint venture known as Fareham Retail Partnership, Lend Lease & THI already own Fareham shopping centre, bought from Standard Life last year. Fareham Council will select the preferred developer next week.
