Private sector balks at financing £30m road scheme

The private sector has been unable to finance a £30m network of traffic control centres on the Enlgish main road network.

It is now likely the Treasury will have to fund the project itself. Alternatively, there are also plans to update the country’s 40 police centres to cope.

The new centres would have provided information for motorists through message signs on the roads and in-car navigation systems. It was planned to charge motorists for this information. The Highways Agency is planning further talks with the private sector.
