Truro retail schemes await Carrick Council decision

Carrick Council, in Cornwall, is to meet shortly to discuss the future of retail development in Truro. The meeting is expected to influence which of three rival schemes goes ahead first.

Longwood Estates submitted a planning application in March for a 23,900sq m (257,265 sq ft) covered scheme at the north west end of Pydar Street, the current prime pitch.

London & Amsterdam, a joint venture between ING Real Estate and London & Easter Properties, will shortly submit a detailed planning application for a 18,580 sq m (200,000 sq ft) open scheme for the area known as The Opes., said Ben Rainford, of London & Amserdam. The site is behind Lemon Street, Charles Street, Calenick Street, Victoria Square and St Nicholas Street.

In February, Truro-based developer Royston Leigh submitted a detailed planning application for Lemon Quay car park. The scheme would also include 18,580 sq m of retail, plus a landscaped piazza.

Managing director Dennis Angiley said: “We have assembled the land and are in advanced negotiations with an anchor store. We are almost ready to go.”

Debenhams has a requirement for Truro and was previously linked with The Opes when the scheme was being promoted directly by Sun Alliance. Royal & Sun owns a large part of the site.
