Birmingham city council has granted outline planning permission for Land Securities’ Martineau Galleries shopping centre scheme.
The consent is subject to two resolutions passed by councillors at today’s planning committee meeting. They want assurances that a twenty-four hour pedestrian route will be built to ensure access from the High Street to Dale End. They also want LandSec to develop the scheme on an “incremental basis.” LandSec will have to include plans for the pedestrian route in its detailed planning application.
The developer welcomed the decision, describing it as; “A significant milestone in the regeneration of Birmingham.” The scheme will now be referred to the secretary of state for the Environment, who could still decide to call it in.
