Boeing to build training centre at Gatwick or Heathrow

Boeing is to spend $170m (£103m) on a flight crew and maintenance staff training centre at either Gatwick or Heathrow airport. The world’s biggest aircraft manufacturer said it was also talking to BAA and to hotel operators about possibly building a hotel near the centre to accommodate trainees.

It will spent an initial $85m on the London centre, but this is expected to double in its first four years of operation. A decision on which airport to choose will be made next month. It expects to open at the beginning of 2000.
