Government commits £167m to Nottingham tram scheme

A scheme to bring trams to Nottingham was given a £167m government cash launch tonight.

The revenue support move for Nottingham Express Transit (NET) was announced in a Commons written reply by Transport Minister Dr John Reid.

He said: “The government is to provide £167m of revenue support to Nottingham City Council so it can fund its side of the deal. The NET is an early local authority Private Finance Initiative project.”

But he warned that NET will take up a large part of his department’s budget for local authority PFI projects. “We will not be in a position to support similar light rail schemes in this way for the foreseeable future.”

The scheme will be built by a private sector consortium Arrow comprising ADtranz Total Rail Systems based at Derby – where the trams will be built, Tarmac Construction, French public transport operator Transdev SA and bus operator Nottingham City Transport.

The first trams are set to run in 2002.
