A local developer has been granted permission for a factory outlet centre at Gilford, County Down, Northern Ireland, to include some 8,825 sq m (95,000 sq ft) of new retail floorspace.
The project, which aims to combine retail outlets with arts and cultural tourism, is known as Gilford Mill and is situated on a 12.95ha (32 acre site) in the Belfast to Dublin corridor. The development will feature the restoration of a 18,115 sq m (195,000 sq ft) listed 19th-century linen thread mill, which is intended to be a tourist destination.
Jane Shaw, developer Gilford Mill’s project manager, said the scheme’s policy will be to restrict retail tenants to authentic manufacturers, retailers with their own brand and their franchisees/licensees. Discount retailers will be discouraged.
Construction is expected to start in August and the developer anticipates opening in summer 2000.
