John Prescott, environment minister, has overruled Tewkesbury borough council by rejecting Bryant Homes’ plan to build 51 houses on the site of the Battle of Tewkesbury.
The site is on Gaston Field, on the southern edge of the Gloucestershire town.
The council maintained there was insufficient proof the 4.05ha (10 acre) plot was the site of the battle. But Prescott concluded the development would have had an irreversibly damaging impact on the battlefield. English Heritage accused the planners of bringing shame on themselves.
