J Sainsbury is to extend its stores to provide extra space for the introduction of non-food areas.
It also plans to renovate its 413-strong estate which it admits is old, out of date and compromised.
The extensions and renovations will take about five years at a rate of 50-70 annually. It intends to slow down new openings. Any new outlets will mostly be on high streets rather than out of town.
