Crosby Homes has extended its joint-venture deal with Birmingham Mailbox to bring a further 60 city centre apartments on an additional 0.2 ha (0.5 acre) canalside site next to the £100m, 92,900 sq m (1m sq ft) mixed-use development.
The new residential scheme, with an estimated end value of £6m, will be built on Salvage Wharf, which is subject to a development agreement between landowner British Waterways and developer Birmingham Mailbox. Crosby is already developing 140 roof-top apartments on the Mailbox site after acquiring some 3,530 sq m (38,000 sq ft) of existing space and some 10,497 sq m (113,000 sq ft) in air rights last year.
Geoff Hutchinson, Chairman of Crosby, said: “Birmingham has experienced a huge resurgence in city centre living over the last few months. The Mailbox provides us with unique opportunity to provide both roof-top living and canalside dwellings. There are very few locations available in Birmingham today to live by the water and we are very excited to have secured this opportunity.”
The Salvage Wharf apartments will offer one to three bedrooms fronting the water or an internal courtyard. All the Crosby apartments at Mailbox will be available in summer 2000.
Mailbox, which was set up by former Brindleyplace director Alan Chatham, is developing the former Royal Mail Sorting Office into a mixed-use scheme on a 10.11ha (25 acre) site in the city centre.
Knight Frank is advising Crosby on the residential sales.
