The government has launched an initiative aimed at reversing “thirty years of decline” in Liverpool.
Liverpool Vision is a corporate partnership between Liverpool city council, English Partnerships, the North West Development Agency (NWDA), the Government Office for the North West and the private sector. It is the first such initiative arising out of the Urban Task Force report on urban regeneration published yesterday.
The new body will promote development, training and community involvement in the regeneration process. The City Council, English Partnerships and the NWDA have given £200,000 each in initial funding. Reversing Liverpool’s population decline, from 1m to 400,000 in thirty years, will be a priority.
Launching the project, planning minister Richard Caborn said: “A successful Liverpool is essential to a successful economy in the North-West. Over the past decade or so, various piecemeal initiatives have been introduced to reinvigorate the centre, but there was a lack of leadership and co-ordination. Liverpool Vision will change that.”
