Glaxo shake-up threatens UK plants

Glaxo Wellcome is expected to close UK plants as part of a worldwide restructuring of the business.

The company plans to slash the workforce by one-fifth. Plants at risk in the UK include Dartford in Kent; Barnard Castle in County Durham; Ware, Herefordshire; Speke, Merseyside; and Beckenham, Kent.

Glaxo has been shifting production to lower cost sites outside the UK for a number of years. The company has operations in Singpore and Argentina.
