Environment Secretary John Prescott has given the go-ahead for a 2,500 sq m (26,911 sq ft) Tesco supermarket on the edge of Tetbury, on the grounds that it would revitalise the Cotwold town.
An inspector recommended outline planning consent for the superstore claiming the Gloucestershire market town needed more food shops to serve the 5,000-strong population.
The scheme also provides parking for 251 vehicles on the 1.7ha (4.2 acre) site on an industrial estate 400 m (1,312 ft) from the town centre, within a built-up area.
