A Leicester solicitor, who became embroiled in a mortgage fraud that left a building society thousands of pounds out of pocket, was struck off by a disciplinary tribunal today.
Gurmit Singh Kang acted for the buyers and the Bristol & West Building Society in the purchase of a property in Leicester in 1990.
The vendor and purchaser were an uncle and nephew respectively. Mr Kang failed to give the building society the correct purchase price of the property, and breached four limbs of Practice Rule 1 in the course of the transaction. Eventually the Bristol & West lost £120,000 on the deal.
During the hearing Mr Kang said that he was ashamed of his “serious professional failure” but that he had not been party to “conscious impropriety”.
Tribunal chairman Anthony Isaacs said Mr Kang would be struck off to safeguard the profession and public.
