Hampden Park gets £4.4m bail-out

The Scottish Football Association is taking over the management of Hampden Park in a bid to bail out the £70m refurbishment of the financially strapped stadium.

The £4.4m rescue plan could lift the cloud hanging over what is one of Britain’s leading millennium projects after the ambitious refurbishment ran into financial difficulties earlier this year.

The Scottish executive, Glasgow Development Agency, the Millennium Commission and Glasgow City Council are funding the 55,000-seater stadium. The funding situation came to a head after Sir Robert McAlpine threatened to sue to recover unpaid invoices from the National Stadium Company, which runs Hampden.
