Tesco has announced it is to triple the number of stores providing its online shopping service – Tesco Direct, within the next 12 months to cover 90% of the UK’s population.
The supermarket giant currently operates the service from 100 stores. This will increase to 300 stores, providing a further 7,000 jobs to operate the grocery delivery service.
Tesco Direct, with 250,000 registered customers, is also expanding online non-food services such as books, clothing, gifts, furnishings and banking this year.
Chief executive Terry Leahy said: “The growth of e-commerce over the past year proved the enormous demand from our customers for this exciting venture. The existing internet home shopping service is already making money and we expect it to grow.”
