A merger between Britain’s two largest co-operative societies will create the biggest funeral business and the largest neighbourhood food retailer.
The combination of the Co-operative Retail Services (CRS) and the Co-operative Wholesale Society will make the group the sixth-largest food retailer by turnover.
CRS members will vote on March 4 on the proposals. A two-thirds majority is required for it to go ahead. The decision will need to be ratified on March 25.
