Wilson Bowden wins battle to rebuild Ravenscraig

Wilson Bowden has been selected as the preferred developer for the £700m redevelopment of the former Ravenscraig steelworks in Lanarkshire, Scotland, as a New Town with up to 92,900 sq m (1m sq ft) of retail space.

Ravenscraig is the biggest single derelict site in the UK and one of largest brownfield sites in Europe at over 455.3ha (1,125 acres).

The announcement was made as work began on the construction of a spine road that will create access to the former British Steel site. The regeneration programme has been drawn up by Lanarkshire Development Agency, North Lanarkshire council and Corus (formerly British Steel) working together as the Ravenscraig Regeneration Partnership.

Since the closure of the former steelworks in 1992, Corus has spent over £20m on decontamination and site clearance.
