London Underground (LU) has unveiled its proposals for the refurbishment and expansion of Tottenham Court Road station in a bid to alleviate congestion for the 100,000 passengers who use the station every day.
Plans include a public plaza at the foot of Centre Point, as well as an enlarged ticket hall, three new escalators for the Northern Line, new tunnel links to platforms, and lifts.
LU has prepared its proposals in consultation with: Westminster and Camden councils; MEPC, which owns Centre Point; Consolidated Developments which is proposing a mixed-use scheme for the Denmark Place site opposite the station; and London Transport Buses.
The submission of LU’s planning application on Tuesday marks the start of an 18-month public consultation process. Construction is scheduled to begin at the end of 2001 at the earliest and take about four years.
