Blunkett proposes Charter Schools network for Britain

A new network of US-style technology-based Charter Schools is envisaged for Britain under radical reforms David Blunkett is expected to announce today.

The education secretary wants to enable private companies to establish state schools in inner-city trouble spots and suburbs to provide choice for parents. Sponsors could convert existing schools or build new ones.

Blunkett plans 10 new specialist academies centres in the largest cities such as Manchester, Leeds and London. It will be expanded if successful.
