Central Railways will ask deputy prime minister John Prescott today to support plans for a £5bn freight-only railway.
The 400-mile project would run from Liverpool to the Channel Tunnel and run alongside the M25 west of London and through tunnels under the North Downs in Surrey.
It is likely to provoke much local protest.
