Appeal launched to turn Hampshire Austen mansion into study centre

A £3m appeal is launched today to restore a Jane Austen family mansion so it can become an international study centre for women’s writing.

The property in the Hampshire village of Chawton will be known as Chawton House Library.

The plan is that it will open as a non-residential study centre in July 2003. It has been left empty and decaying since the 1980s. Repairs are underway.
