Government Inspector Douglas Machin will throw out three big greenfield housebuilding schemes south of Reading, Berkshire, in the South East.
Each of the schemes would have comprised 2,500 homes each at Grazeley, Spencers Wood and Shinfield in open countryside which had previously been protected from development by the M4 acting as a natural barrier.
Deputy prime minister John Prescott will have the final say but the inspector’s rejection is based on Prescott’s own guidelines for housing planning.
