The High Court has given Warner Village Cinemas the go-ahead to challenge Croydon council’s attempts to pave the way for a further cinema development in Croydon.
The complex would rival a similar scheme Warner Village is contractually committed to build and operate in the area – a multi-screen cinema at the Grants department store site in central Croydon.
Warner accuses the council of doing an about turn in respect of planning consent for a site adjoining east Croydon station.
It says a change of heart by the council in respect of development of the station site could adversely affect its cinema plans. It has been given leave to seek judicial review of the councils stance over the site.
In its application for leave to challenge the council, Warner claims that for years the council adopted a policy of seeking to ensure that any proposals for regeneration of the station site would complement development proposals for the Warner site. Warner argues that the councils approach now represents a total abandonment of that policy.
