Rail recovery plan agreed

The rail industry has agreed a National Recovery Programme to deal with cracked rail tracks and to sort out the chaos caused by closures and speed restrictions.

Shadow Strategic Rail Authority chairman Sir Alastair Morton will take charge of the project which will be ready in two weeks. Working parties will examine the industrys structure. The results will be published in the new year. Deputy prime minister John Prescott said the biggest inspection of railway track ever attempted was essential.

A train came off the lines on the Weybridge, Surrey to Staines train yesterday, the third derailment in two weeks.
