Home Office HQ wins planning consent

The new Home Office headquarters on Marsham Street, SW1, has been given planning consent by Westminster Council.

The controversial scheme is being developed by the Godfrey Bradman-led Annes Gate Property group.

The consent means that work can now begin on the demolition of the existing buildings at 2 Marsham Street (pictured), known as the “three ugly sisters”, to make way for the new scheme which will also include 131 flats.

Design watchdog CABE criticised the development last year for failing to live up to the Government’s own campaign to provide better public buildings.

The design team on the new building is led by Terry Farrell & Partners. It should be ready for occupancy by the end of 2004.
