The Welsh Development Agency (WDA) is to submit an outline planning application to Conwy council for redevelopment of the 7.3ha (18-acre) former Hotpoint site at Llandudno Junction in North Wales.
Proposals are for a mixed development of industrial, commercial and leisure buildings totalling 25,733 sq m (277,000 sq ft). The site lies astride the A55 expressway, which runs along the North Wales coast. As the site is within the Objective One area of North Wales, the WDA believes it may be eligible for European funding support.
The agency hopes the planned development will bring much-needed investment into the area, which was badly hit by Hotpoints relocation to Bodelwyddan two years ago. “This is an important strategic site within North Wales, providing substantial employment opportunities for the area,” said the WDAs chief executive Graham Hawker.
Demolition of the 27,870 sq m (300,000 sq ft) Hotpoint factory and the 4,645 sq m (50,000 sq ft) machine shop are due to start within the next three months. The planning application includes a new access road and internal road systems.
