Prime Minister laughs off Prescott’s punch

Prime Minister Tony Blair made light of John Prescott lashing out at a protester in Rhyl, North Wales at a press conference this morning.

Speaking from Millbank Tower, the Prime Minister Tony Blair said: “Of course it would have been better if the whole thing hadn’t happened. But John is John. He has got many very great strengths.”

Amid howls of laughter from the assembled journalists, Blair added: “In his left arm.”

The Deputy Prime Minister was in Rhyl to promote the manifesto, Ambitions for Britain, when he was attacked by a man in the crowd. The 29-year-old protester threw an egg at the DETR secretary, and Prescott reacted with a left jab to the protester’s face.

In a statement issued this morning Prescott said: “I suddenly felt a blow to the side of my head – I did not know what it was. I responded to defend myself.” He admitted that it was a “regrettable incident”.
