The £3.3bn second stage of the Channel tunnel rail link begins today.
It will be seen as an important test of the construction industrys ability to deliver high-profile projects on time and on budget.
The second stage will go under the River Thames through 12 miles of tunnels to a new-look St Pancras station. It will connect with the first section of the project near Gravesend, in north-west Kent, when complete, to create a 68-mile rail link between the Channel tunnel and central London.
